The Drawdown Georgia Greenhouse Gas Emissions Trackers provide monthly greenhouse gas emission estimates for the entire state of Georgia, Georgia’s 159 counties, and over 200 cities. Emissions are categorized by sector to give us a picture of where emissions are now and how they change as we advance on our goal of drawing down Georgia’s carbon emissions.

These interactive maps were developed by leading researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology and are based on publicly available, state-level data that is downscaled to the county and city levels. The values in each Tracker are estimates rather than directly measured values or the results of individual local greenhouse gas inventories.

The Drawdown Georgia GHG Emissions Tracker provides greenhouse gas emissions data at the state and county levels, beginning in January 2005. Emissions estimates are categorized by sector to give us a picture of where emissions are now and how they change as we advance on our goal of drawing down Georgia’s carbon emissions.

City-Level Greenhouse Gas Emissions Tracker

The City-Level Tracker provides greenhouse gas emissions data for 217 cities in Georgia. When using the City-Level tracker, you can select cities from the map, but it is usually easier to select a city from the drop-down menu at the upper left. When the Tracker loads, the data displayed reflects emissions data for these 217 cities only – not the state as a whole.

Where does the data come from?

The process of estimating local emissions begins with statewide fossil fuel emissions calculated from monthly data published by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation and annual data published in the State Inventory Tool and FLIGHT large facility emissions database, both created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The statewide emissions data is converted to county values using local indicator variables to calculate each county’s share of statewide emissions. The major indicator variables include:

Population and housing characteristics from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey
Employment information from the Census Bureau’s Quarterly Workforce Indicators dataset
Vehicle miles traveled from the U.S. Department of Transportation
Forest coverage from the National Land Cover Database (multiple agencies)
Agriculture crop harvests and animal counts from the Department of Agriculture’s Census of Agriculture

The Trackers display state-level data that is downscaled to the county and city levels. The values in each Tracker are estimates rather than directly measured values or the results of individual local greenhouse gas inventories.

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions

The mix of gases that trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, including: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases. GHG emissions on this tracker are represented as carbon dioxide equivalent, a standardized way to describe the global warming potential of any GHG. Emissions are converted into the amount of carbon dioxide that would have the same global warming impact.

Metric Tons (mt)

This is the unit of measurement for greenhouse gas emissions on the tracker. One metric ton equals 2,205 pounds and is about half the weight of a full-sized pickup truck or mid-sized SUV.

Net Emissions

Net Emissions on this tracker reflect the difference between total emissions from transportation, industry, buildings and agriculture and the carbon reduction that comes from forests in Georgia.
